The best way to measure your child's foot is by tracing the shape of it onto a piece of paper. Then, using a ruler, measure the following:

  • the length of the foot from the back of the heel to     the end of the tallest toe

  • the width of the widest part of the foot

  • the width of the heel

Don’t rely on the size of your child's last pair of shoes. their feet do get larger, and lasts (shoemakers’ sizing moulds) also vary.

Both feet should be measured, feet are seldom precisely the same size. If two feet are different in sizes, shoes should be chosen that fit the larger foot best.

The child’s foot should be sized while he or she is standing up with full weight-bearing or if possible while sitting if your child cannot bear weight.

Measure your child's feet while they are wearing the same type of socks or stockings you expect to wear with the shoes.

Be accurate.

When it comes to selecting  your child's orthopaedic footwear, please consult with your child's therapist, podiatrist, pedorthist or doctor. The healthcare professional will conduct a full assessment of your child's lower limbs and advise you if orthopaedic shoes will be beneficial. They will also help to measure your child's feet properly and let you know which orthopaedic features are required for their foot type and condition.

When purchasing shoes for children, remember these tips:

  • Select a shoe with a leather upper, stiff heel counter, appropriate cushioning of the insole, flexibility at the ball of the foot and a built-in arch.

  • It should be flexible enough to bend where the foot bends—at the ball of the foot, not in the middle of the shoe.

  • There should be about one-half inch of space (or a thumb’s width) between the tip of the toes and the end of the shoe. The child should be able to comfortably wiggle his or her toes in the shoe.

  • Shoes should not slip off at the heels.

  • If you wear prescription orthotics—biomechanical inserts prescribed by a podiatrist—you should take them along to shoe fittings.

If you are planning on ordering shoes online, please insure you have followed our feet measuring tips and guidelines and actually measured your child's feet.

Please don't hesitate to contact us and we can help you to choose the right footwear for your child.

Make sure you check our returns policy first,  just in case the shoes don’t fit. You don’t want to be left with a pair of ill-fitting shoes that cannot be used or returned.

FOOTWEAR BUYING TIPS
 OUR RANGE

Being good parents, we worry about our children's teeth, eyes, and other parts of the body. We teach washing, brushing, and grooming, but what do we do about their feet--those still-developing feet which have to carry the entire weight of the body for a lifetime.

When a child begins to walk, shoes are generally not necessary. Allowing an infant to go barefooted indoors helps the foot grow normally and develop normal strength and alignment.

As children grow more active, and their feet develop, the need for shoes becomes more apparent.

Orthopaedic shoes are shoes that support or accommodate the mechanics and structure of the foot, ankle and leg and are specifically designed to support or accommodate a particular medical condition. Many children require orthopaedic shoes because they were born with, developed or acquired abnormalities in the systems and structures of the foot and lower leg, such as children with cerebral palsy or acquired brain injury.

However, the great new is, that modern orthopaedic footwear is actually supportive and comfortable and can be worn by everyone, not only those with a medical condition. Orthopaedic footwear can help to promote the correct growth and development of your child's gait and posture, helping to keep them mobile, comfortable and pain free and ultimately happier and healthier.

Please consult with your child's therapist, podiatrist, pedorthist or doctor to see what kind of orthopaedic footwear is suitable for your child.
