ARCH SUPPORTING INSOLES
ORTHOTICS FOR CLINICIANS

If your child’s arch development is atypical for their age, such as flat feet or collapsed arches, or your child has other neurological or development conditions affecting the lower limbs and feet, it is important to have an evaluation by trained paediatric therapist, podiatrist or medical consultant who can assess foot alignment and function. They can recommend a treatment plan which could involve corrective foot orthotics (shoe inserts that help support and correct poor foot alignment) inside supportive orthopaedic shoes. It is important that your child’s foot alignment issues are treated early, to encourage normal development while preventing further deformity and reducing abnormal forces on the feet, ankle, knees, hips, pelvis and spine during the formative years. We have a range of off the shelf, corrective orthotics available for your trained clinician to prescribe according to your child’s needs.

A child’s foot bears its weight 5000 times or more each day, or nearly 2 million times per year. Any altered foot position can affect their hips, pelvis and spine over a lifetime because of the complex interlinked nature of the human body. Generally, at 1 year of age, when children are standing, they have rectangular shaped feet in full contact with the floor and the heel bone tilts inwards slightly. As their foot grows, develops and strengthens, by 4-5 years of age, an arch is clearly visible, the heel bone tilt is barely detectable and the foot has changed to more of a triangular shape. Children’s arch and foot posture development, which is closely related to ligament status, movement skills, and habits of weight distribution over the feet, can progress atypically in some children causing foot alignment and postural problems.

If your child’s foot posture and arch development are within a normal range for their age, and they do not have painful symptoms, then well fitting, orthopaedically supportive footwear with built in arch support is typically all that is recommended to help your child’s feet and arches remain happy, healthy and aligned. All of our Carmella’s House branded footwear comes standard with a removable full length arch supporting insole (unless otherwise requested) and all Medica Shoes also have various built-in or removable arch supporting insole options available. Please visit our shop to view our range of comfortable, cost-effective full length arch supporting insoles available to fit all our footwear, including a sports style suitable for more active use.
